In January 2006 I moved into a tranquil and light filled studio located in the Wessex Estate off Portsdown Road in the south of Singapore. The estate comprises 214 old black and white colonial style houses and twenty six walk up apartment blocks that were built in the 1940s. It is also the new home of the COLBAR, the infamous laidback hangout which was relocated amid much protest in 2003 to make way for a new expressway. The area as a whole has been spared demolition since it was earmarked to become the creative heart of Singapore's new ultra modern science hub 'One-North'. Work has begun on refurbishing many of the original black and white apartment blocks and the area is attracting an exciting mix of artists and those involved in various creative industries.
